Grade the trade idea: Jazz trade Collin Sexton to upstart playoff contender

This team could use Sexton, but is this the best the Jazz could hope for?

Another day, another proposed trade involving Collin Sexton. It's been brought up ad nauseum that though the Utah Jazz will likely dangle Sexton before the trade deadline, they may not trade him just to get rid of him.

There have been proposed trades involving Sexton, but they seemed like trades that would signal that the Jazz want him off the team no matter what. There's no indication that that's the case even if Sexton is available.

Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz proposed a better trade for Sexton, but it's unclear whether that's the best deal the Jazz can hope for in return for Sexton. He proposed the following swap between the Jazz and Atlanta Hawks.

Hawks receive: Sexton

Jazz receive: Kobe Bufkin, Larry Nance Jr., 2025 Timberwolves second-round pick, 2030 Hawks second-round pick

Swartz explained why the Hawks would do it. Besides the fact that they could use Sexton's complementary scoring, it would also be a fun homecoming for Sexton. This would be a trade where the Jazz would do right by Sexton.

But why would Utah make this trade? This is technically better than other proposed Sexton trades, but not by much. In exchange for the young scorer, the Jazz get a young player whose value isn't super high, along with an expiring contract that Utah has no use for to go with two second-round picks.

If the Jazz agreed to this deal, it screams, "We just wanted to get rid of him."

What trades like this may indicate about Sexton's value

Hypothetical Sexton trades continue to indicate that his value really isn't that high. Or, it's about as low as John Collins and Jordan Clarkson's is. While it's not like the Jazz should expect a King's ransom for him, he is impactful enough as a player that it's not too unrealistic to suggest they could start a bidding war for him.

Reports have indicated how much players like Clarkson are worth, but nothing has been released regarding Sexton's worth. That will likely change over the next few weeks as the deadline approaches. There have been trades where teams didn't get much value for their valued rotation players. That might be why some believe Sexton won't fetch back that much.

This isn't a terrible trade if the Jazz simply want Sexton off the roster and can't find the deal they want for him. However, it it comes to that point, he still has another year on his contract and has given no indication that he wants out.
