Plenty of trades have been floated regarding Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton. Some of them are not great, while others have been downright terrible. No recent intel has confirmed this, but if the Jazz are serious about trading Sexton, the price should be at least one first-round pick.
The best could be yet to come from Sexton. He's in his mid-20's, and he's shown his improvement as an all-around player in Utah. They may or may not want to see what Keyonte George and Isaiah Collier are made of, but even if that's where they are leaning, they should simply hand him over.
The trades mentioned above imply that the Jazz's mindset with a Sexton to trade him is to get rid of him. However, Miami Heat on SI's Sean Jordan proposed a Sexton trade that would send the Jazz a first-round pick back for him, although they would also have to take back a bad contract.
Jordan floated the following deal between the Heat and the Jazz.
Heat receive: Sexton, Svi Mykhailiuk
Jazz receive: Terry Rozier, 2029 first-round pick
Jordan explained why Rozier would have some appeal for Utah.
"Added along with a future first-round pick, the Jazz can build around 2023 first-round pick Keyonte George at guard. Rozier could serve as a veteran presence for one of the younger rosters in the NBA."
Along with that, Rozier was drafted by Danny Ainge in the 2015 NBA Draft. Ainge has acquired some of his former draft picks since joining the Jazz's front office. Rozier would make for a fun reunion, but
it's safe to say that he has not won over a lot of people down in South Beach since acquiring him last year.
Rozier's deal runs for another year, he's older, and he makes a fair amount more money than Sexton. The headline from this trade is not getting Rozier. It's getting a first-round pick, but in Miami's case, that's a pick the Jazz would want.
This trade would work quite well for Utah
Right now, not all is well in Miami. They've been dealing with the Jimmy Butler drama, and while Kevin Love made it sound like perhaps Butler has changed his mind on leaving the Heat, who's to say he won't change it back?
Even then, by 2029, Butler will either be past his prime, out of Miami, or retired. There's no telling where the Heat will be by then. Depending on what protections that pick would have, that could rival the Lakers pick the Jazz have two years from now.
Ainge and Pat Riley have some bad blood, but that hasn't really come up in over a decade. If enough time has passed, and the Heat are that desperate, this is a good deal for Sexton.
Grade: B+. Compared to the recent hypothetical trades involving Sexton, it's a massive step-up.
