Darryn Peterson has been praised as a generational talent for years on end. He was heralded as one of the top three recruits in the country in a stacked 2025 class, sustained the hype throughout his freshman season in college, and ultimately went No. 2 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Thankfully for Peterson, he now has an NBA coach who's committed to turning him into the superstar he's capable of becoming: Utah Jazz sideline general Will Hardy.

Hardy is preparing for his fifth season as head coach of the Jazz. Despite the team's lackluster results, he's been steadily backed by the front office as an individual they seem to believe can bring the best out of the talent that's been assembled. His early work with Peterson is justifying their belief.

During a recent episodes of The Hoop Collective, NBA insider Tim MacMahon revealed that Hardy is already challenging Peterson to improve defensively.

"Will Hardy's really going to be challenging him to produce on the defensive end. And he thinks he's got really good defensive potential. He's 6'5", 200 pounds, long arms, strong, obviously a good athlete."

MacMahon continued, explaining how Hardy has already been sitting Peterson down after summer league games to go over his defensive shortcomings.

"Will is basically saying, 'It's on me to earn his trust but I'm going to be coaching him hard.' Including a film session the morning after going play by play through his Summer League debut. I asked him, 'What were you really emphasizing?'And he said: 'There's a lot of stuff on the defensive end.'"

Peterson is a tremendous talent, but it's coaches like Hardy who often prove to be the key to turning talent into superstar-level execution on both ends of the floor.

Peterson is an impressive athlete and a prototypical guard from a measurement perspective. At the 2026 NBA Draft Combine, he measured at 6'4.5" without shoes and 198.8 pounds with a 6'9.75" wingspan. His film also proves that he's far more explosive than he tested.

All of this adds up to Peterson having the physical capability to play at a high level on the defensive end of the floor, particularly with the versatility he's displayed to match up against all three perimeter positions.

Thankfully, Hardy is already showing Peterson where he can improve. Summer league games may not always be the most competitive, but they still offer an opportunity for players to develop and display positive tendencies on either end of the floor.

For Peterson, the opportunity he has this summer appears to be a chance to change his approach to defense and make adjustments to how he approaches situations he'll inevitably encounter in the NBA.

Jazz are too talented for anyone to justify defensive inconsistency

The pace of the NBA game may be faster and the talent level may be more extreme, but that doesn't mean it's too early to unlearn bad habits. Along those same lines, it's never too soon to provide a rookie with information about how they can best guarantee themselves minutes, as well as how they can most ideally complement their teammates.

Utah is in a unique position in that regard with two All-Stars in Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen, and a number of productive young players, including Ace Bailey, Keyonte George, and Brice Sensabaugh.

Peterson is clearly a priority, but he's entering a competitive situation. The Jazz have a small surplus of players who have justified a high volume of touches and shot attempts, and Peterson realizing his potential will include figuring out how to get his looks without compromising his teammates' rhythm.

That same principle will be applied to defense, as there are far too many talented shot creators on the roster for anyone to justify slacking off on the other end of the floor. Thankfully, Hardy is on the case.
