The Utah Jazz may end up seeing more Kris Dunn than expected.

The Utah Jazz are going to figure out who their starting point guard is going to be for the 2023-2024 season, sooner rather than later. Right now there are a lot of possibilities for the role. Jordan Clarkson could move over to the position, and give the Jazz a run-and-gun shooter at the spot. They could go with Collin Sexton, a more efficient version of Clarkson but without his track record.

You have Talen Horton-Tucker who has youth and upside on his side but lacks in quality shot selection. And of course, you have Kris Dunn, the better defender and passer of the group but someone who lacks the scoring ability that the others have.

Yet, despite his deficiencies, some believe that Dunn is going to end up with the job. Utah Jazz beat writer for Desert News, Sarah Todd, believes that Dunn is going to be the opening day starter for the Jazz, saying as such in one of her recent mailbags.

She goes on to say;

"If it were me coaching the team, independent of a front office and the league at large, I would start Dunn.… If the Jazz start out the season with (Talen) Horton-Tucker or they decide to just throw (Keyonte) George into the fire to see how he reacts, then it could mean that Dunn is coming off the bench.But if the Jazz believe that Dunn’s showing last season is a true indication of the type of player he is now, he could be truly deserving of the starting point guard role.I think that in the first couple weeks of the season, we’ll learn a lot about the direction the team is going when it comes to that position.d"

Dunn is absolutely the type of guy that the Jazz’s proposed starting five could use. Right now it looks like Jordan Clarkson, Lauri Markkanen, John Collins and Walker Kessler are going to be your starting two through five. So if they do end up being the starting corp, what kind of player do you want at point guard?

Well, not someone who’s going to take shots away from Clarkson, Markkanen, and Collins. And while Collins and Markkanen are far from liabilities on defense, like Clarkson, they’re not exactly prime-Mark Eaton either.

You need a player that compliments them, and of all the options, Dunn makes the most sense. If Clarkson gets dealt, Markkanen regresses, or Collins doesn’t find his old form, then we have to re-think who starts at point guard.
