Sacramento Kings receive Joe Johnson, Iman Shumpert

Sacramento also gets rights to 2015 second-round pick Dimitrios Agravanis, a 2020 second-round draft pick and $3.2 million in cash.

Man, Kings gon’ do Kings things. George Hill was arguably their biggest free agent acquisition last summer. Now, just six months later, they’ve sold him for scraps. I’ll give them props for getting off a less than awesome contract and a semi-disgruntled player. However, one can’t help but wonder what the point of it all was.

Joe Johnson has already been released by the team, which frees him to join a contender. He’s reportedly set to join the Houston Rockets, which may be his best shot at a title outside of Oakland. So, for him, the deal is a big win.

Iman Shumpert’s future seems less certain. He’s been limited to just 14 games this season due to various injuries and is currently battling plantar fasciitis. He’s probably not a long-term option for the Kings, but I don’t know that he’s in-line for a buyout either. He may opt to stay put, then take his player option and force Sacramento to pay him next season.

One way or the other, though, his contract is going to end. Although he’s under 30, I don’t know what’s next for him when that time comes.
