Derrick Favors

After seven years in a Jazz uniform, Derrick Favors looks to be at the end of his time in the 801. His contract is up after the season, at which point he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. The word on the street is that he’s bound to sign elsewhere, although he’s rejected the idea that re-upping with the Jazz is impossible.

There’s plenty of reason to keep him around, too. Just two nights ago, he played a key role in helping the Jazz secure a big win over the New Orleans Pelicans, scoring 19 points, grabbing seven boards and knocking down two 3-point shots. He also seems to be meshing well with Gobert, which has always been the big bugaboo with Faves.

As ever, though, the question remains whether the Gobert-Favors combination works in the long-term. Particularly when they’re not sharing the floor with both a high-level scorer (like a Gordon Hayward) AND a shooting point guard (like a George Hill). Even then, Favors may prefer not to play second fiddle to the Stifle Tower in the Jazz frontcourt.

Many are split on the idea of trading him before the deadline. I tend to feel like you have to get something for him if you know he’s going to leave. The Jazz probably feel the same way. Nevertheless, it takes two to tango.
