Keyonte George shows the good, the bad, & the okay in Jazz loss vs Spurs
By Matt John
Keyonte George is starting to look better for the Utah Jazz, though his progress continues to be baby steps. George has not been very efficient from the field, but in recent weeks, he hasn't been laying the bricks as consistently as he was when the season began.
In fact, against the San Antonio Spurs, George had one of his best games given what the Jazz expect of him. There were still some warts, but the Jazz will gladly accept what George did for them against the Spurs.
But what were these warts and non warts?
The Good
The main reason why the Jazz have such high faith in George is his scoring prowess. When he's on his game, George can light it up. Again, the initial results weren't too pretty, but they are starting to get better. Against the Spurs, he put up his best scoring performance.
Sure, Sexton put up more points in the Jazz's win against the Bulls, but that still came from inefficient shooting. In this game, George was on all night long. On the night, George put up 26 points on nine-for-15 shooting, which included six three-pointers.
This is the player the Jazz envisioned when they gave the keys to George to power the offense. Lauri Markkanen might be their No. 1, but the Jazz clearly believe George can be on Markkanen's level someday, and night's like tonight show why.
The Bad
George is showing progress as a scorer, but his ball control is still going through some growing pains. For as many points as George scored, he also coughed up six turnovers. George will never be a pure point guard, but can rise up as an all-around guard.
With Jordan Clarkson out and Cody Williams in the G-League, George was expected to be more careful as the primary playmaker. Unfortunately times like these demonstrate that George's ball control will also need time to improve.
The Okay
Not everything about George running the point was bad. He could have done better taking care of the ball, but George's decision-making is starting to get better. He is making the right play more often than not and the box score reflects that.
George dished out five assists, which isn't the best look since he had six turnovers, but it shows that he can playmake for his teammates. The Jazz likely won't count on him to be their court maestro, but the improvements show that he's not a black hole on offense.
The Jazz may have lost against the Spurs, but that game still filed under losing in the fashion that the Jazz should prefer. This will be a season littered with moral victories to compensate for the lack of actual victories.
George improving all-around is the one moral victory the Jazz have been looking for since the start of the season
