The Utah Jazz signaled to Keyonte George that they considered him to be the future going forward after he signed his new extension. He signaled his desire to be with the team no matter what once he put his name on the contract. And now, he and Darryn Peterson have the chance to be the best Jazz backcourt of all time.
George himself is aware of the opportunity at hand. During his appearance on NBA Today, George talked about what impressed him most about Peterson.
"How fast he picks up on things... I think, for him, we talk about different things, whether it's about pick and rolls or iso space. It's even the little things about jumpshots. He picks up on it right away, and he's always willing to learn so I think that's the main thing. Coming in as a high pick and still humble enough to still want to learn."
George proved both just how good he was and how could he can be going forward, while Peterson may be the most talented prospect the Jazz have ever had in franchise history (no one knew Karl Malone and John Stockton were going to be when they came into the league). To have both on the team at the same time for the next four years could unlock some historic times for Utah.
But the first thing both have to do for this to work is for them to be on the same page to have chemistry with one another. From the horse's mouth, it sounds like they're on the right track.
There should be growing pains, but nothing too concerning
George and Peterson together is an exponentially exciting tandem in the Jazz's backcourt. Don't be surprised if we see immediate symmetry between the two, but don't be surprised if they hit a wall both individually as a duo.
The fact of the matter is, even with all the talent they possess, they are young, and youthful talent needs time to adjust to the NBA. That isn't immediate. George himself can attest to this, as around this time last year, there were legitimate questions as to whether he truly was part of the Jazz's future after a disastrous sophomore year.
We don't know what to expect from Peterson besides him showing his potential. Anticipating that he will hit the ground running with George is too high even with the talent he has. But it may not be too surprising if, should they figure it out over time, they eventually start doing some damage once they figure each other out.
