Josh Green may be key to Jazz finding Walker Kessler replacement

Because Green hasn't really been featured in the Jazz's rotation, he may be used to fetch the Jazz a worthy Kessler replacement.

For reasons that are not his nor the team's fault, Josh Green likely won't be featured much in the Utah Jazz's rotation this season. The Jazz simply have too many players that play the same position as Green that they are likely to feature more than him. It's possible he rises above this, but don't hold your breath.

Besides, Green's biggest appeal to the Jazz is that he makes nearly $14.7 million this season, meaning his expiring contract could be used for an upgrade down the line. Especially if Walker Kessler's absence proves to be a problem.

Kessler does leave a void that the Jazz are hoping to fill using multiple centers. For now, we don't know how well they will do without Kessler, but the Jusuf Nurkic injury certainly is a fly in the ointment. Of course, they'll wait to see what they look like when Nurkic comes back, but if Kessler's absence shows itself to be a problem, they have Green to dangle in case a replacement hits the market.

Not only that, but Utah has plenty of draft assets to offer to a team that's hoping to score big time off a center. It likely wouldn't be just Green, but Utah could feasbily pull off a deal without blinking. Green's deal could be the deciding factor in what could be the exact boost to make them super scary.

The Jazz have no urgency to do this immediately

Because Utah has no pressure and will simply want to see what works and what doesn't, there's no reason for them to confront this right away. In fact, the only reason why they would is if it turns out they are closer to being in title contention than we thought and furthermore, are simply a Kessler upgrade away from getting serious.

That's why this season will be so much fun to watch play out. For once, the Jazz are not going to have to hold themselves back when they are playing too well. In fact, if they consistently play too well, that's when a scenario like this could absolutely happen because they will want to see the fulle xtent of how good they are with all their bases covered.

It's a shame Green will likely be seen as more of a trade asset than a rotational piece, as he is a productive player, but the Jazz are a well-run organization who are very aware of the situation they are in. If and when they get the chance to raise their ceiling even more by trading him for more strength in the frontcourt, that just might be all they need to be back in the title hunt.
