Jazz's triumphant fate all but sealed by Thunder in blowout loss

If there was one team Utah is more than happy to lose against, it's Oklahoma City.

If there was a game the Utah Jazz absolutely needed to lose more than any other, it was their finale against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Utah is in a fantastic position to clinch the NBA's fourth-worst record, eradicating the possibility of Oklahoma City getting their pick entirely, so losing to OKC would do wonders for them. TLDR: they lost.

The Thunder made easy work of the Jazz, beating them 146-111. With the loss, the Jazz now sit at 21-58. They are not out of the woods, as they have to lose as many games as they can on top of Sacramento winning one more game, but at this rate, Utah is at the one-yard line of getting the best-case draft scenario.

It doesn't even matter if the Jazz wind up with the No. 8 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. As awesome as it would be to get a better pick than that, retaining it period is the biggest win of all for Utah. The Jazz are all set to go on a tear next season. Regardless of how well they play, their fortunes will be much better than they've been in years, and adding a talented prospect only makes it better.

Oklahoma City has played a hand in that, even if that's not what they would have preferred in the end. It sounds like they are okay with it, even if they missed their chance to add even more talent to an already loaded roster.

It seems the Thunder have fully accepted that they can't fight fate

At first, the Thunder made a big stink out of the Jazz's blatant tanking, but with other teams like New Orleans and Sacramento helping out, there's next to nothing stopping Utah from ensuring their pick won't end up with Oklahoma City in the 2026 NBA Draft. With that, there's nothing OKC can do.

Anyone in the Thunder's shoes would be rightfully annoyed that things didn't go their way with what they could have added. Even more painful is that they had a solid chance of doing the same thing last season, but the ping pong balls bounced against them.

Besides, they have bigger fish to fry than helping their odds of keeping the pick (which seemed already decided a while ago). Even if there are a few games left in the regular season, the Thunder still have to keep the Spurs at arm's length long enough to get the Western Conference crown in the postseason.

Doing so will help their chances of repeating as NBA Champions. In a perfect world, they would have loved the chance to win it all and add a lottery talent, but they'll be more than happy to settle for another championship.

Utah prevented Oklahoma City from having their cake and eating it by, ironically enough, doing it themselves.
