Jazz's next draft pick after Walter Clayton Jr. selection couldn't be clearer

The Utah Jazz had a pretty optimal draft turnout in the first round by adding Ace Bailey and Walter Clayton Jr. in the first round. Because of the Clayton Jr. trade, Utah only has one draft pick left, and it's pretty clear who that should be: Alex Toohey.

Toohey is an international prospect who just played for the Sydney Kings. He is projected to be a late second-round pick. His skillset could be exactly what the Jazz need because he's an energetic forward who would bring hustle and defense. By doing so, he would round out the edges.

The Jazz need players who give 100% on every play, and Toohey can bring just that. They've lacked athleticism on the wing, while Bailey should solve a lot of that problem on his own, there's no such thing as too much in that department.

Toohey also plays within an offense, as he's a solid playmaker for his size and can play in halfcourt sets. The Jazz obviously want more star talent, but they also want players who can fit next to their star talent. Should they part ways with some of their veterans over the next few years, Toohey could potentially replace them at a pretty cheap price, too.

There's one pivotal reason why he would work well for the Jazz at No. 53.

Toohey works as a potential draft-and-stash

Usually, picks in the 50s either don't play in the NBA or play a few years after being drafted, as they then resume their career overseas. Toohey can do the latter, which works perfectly for all sides involved.

Should the Jazz move on from Lauri Markkanen and/or Taylor Hendricks not work out too great, Toohey can be an ace in the hole for them. If those guys prove to be valuable cogs in Utah's future, then obviously, this doesn't need to be discussed, but there's nothing wrong with a failsafe, though it's not exactly a guarantee that Toohey would be a failsafe.

The truth is, the No. 53 pick in the NBA Draft hardly ever works out. That's why teams often opt to draft and stash them because they can give them a flyer down the line to see if they work out. There are candidates for draft and stash at No. 53, but Toohey works out the best because he could give the Jazz a bolt of energy.

Utah already has a full roster and will make some moves this offseason to trim it down. If they took a player who they could evaluate down the line that could prove to be a diamond in the rough, that'd be awesome for them, even if the odds wouldn't be great.

Because Utah shouldn't really be looking for another player in their rotation this season but more for someone who could be a big fixture down the line, Toohey would be their best bet with the No. 53 pick.
