Jazz make sly ploy with former star to land marquee talent in 2026 draft

This is pretty slick while also hinting at next year's approach.

Following a disastrous lottery turnout in 2025, the Utah Jazz are already getting ahead of the curve for next year's impressive draft class. One of the best prospects coming out of next year's class is Cam Boozer, so the Jazz made a sly move to campaign for Cam: hire his dad.

HoopsHype's Michael Scotto revealed that a recognizable Jazz alum will be joining the staff going forward, which just happens to be a year before Cam will enter the NBA Draft.

"In other news, former two-time Jazz All-Star forward Carlos Boozer is with the team here at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago and is expected to join the organization as a scout, league sources told HoopsHype," Scotto wrote.

Carlos played most of his prime as a Jazzman from 2004 to 2010. Not only was he a pivotal player on multiple Jazz playoff teams (including their lone non-Stockton/Malone WCF appearance in franchise history), but he also made two All-Star teams and an All-NBA team during his time in Utah.

If that's not enough, he's made it clear how much he still loves the Jazz fanbase all these years later. If there's one person who can convince Cam that Utah is where he wants to spend his prime, Carlos is the guy.

The next step would be getting their hands on Cam

For the Jazz to have any chance at drafting Boozer's son, they'll have to tank again like they did this year. That will be especially painful for Jazz fans after watching this past season unfold, only for the team to get the No. 5 pick when it was all said and done.

But that's what it's going to take, whether they like it or not. More importantly, because of Utah's reputation, getting Cam could also help the Jazz's chances of securing a future superstar who will want to stick around long-term due to his dad's influence, which wouldn't be a guarantee with other young prospects.

The Jazz want to build a perennial contender the right way. That requires pulling out all the stops to do so. Bringing Carlos Boozer back to the franchise, when he still remains one of the biggest adds in Jazz history warts and all, is a good example of pulling out all the stops.

Jazz fans have every right to be down about what's happened. They just had their worst season ever and still had the worst-case scenario happen to them in the draft lottery, but the team is doing everything they can to right the ship.

This sucks for the Jazz, but they're not moping about it. It's all about adapting to their current situation and planning for what's next. Bringing Boozer back is a good move whether they get his son or not next year, and it sends a message: the Jazz will never stop trying to build a winner.
