There may not have been a coach in the NBA in a more fortunate situation than Will Hardy's with the Utah Jazz. The Jazz have had four consecutive losing seasons, and yet there was never a whisper of Hardy's job being in doubt. That was by design too because a tanking team will not blame a coach when losing is exactly what they're trying to do.
But, Hardy should take note of what happened today with Jamahl Mosley. The Orlando Magic firing him shows that there will only be so much leeway a coach can get before he gets the axe. Mosley got it after coaching the Magic for five years.

Orlando fired Mosley primarily because of the team's lack of progress over the last three years. The Magic have made the playoffs, but have never gotten past the first round with Mosley calling the shots. If Hardy follows a similar path, he won't be coaching the Jazz for long.
Hardy has earned a lot of goodwill in Utah despite the losing because he has shown in stretches how good a coach he can be with the right pieces. The reason why he hasn't proven more is that circumstances prevented him from doing so. Next season, that shouldn't be the case.
Hardy's extension indicates how long his leash is
Utah has already shown their faith in Hardy when they gave him an extension right after the team just had its worst season in franchise history. They even gave him a six-year extension, showing that their belief in him is quite strong.
However, that can be burned to a crisp if he doesn't give the Jazz the results he wants. Next season, he will have immunity, as it will be his first real go at success as the Jazz's coach. If he proves that he can build on a playoff appearance, that will reward their faith in him.
But the Jazz assembled the team that they have in the hopes of winning a title or at the very least contending for one over the next few years. They have a rare window where they have prime Lauri Markkanen to lead them while they also have a potential franchise cornerstone in Ace Bailey waiting in the wings on a team-friendly rookie deal.
It may be unfair to anticipate a title run right out of the gates next season - if Utah wins the lottery, that suddenly becomes a possibility - but the bar for Hardy is to get the Jazz to the playoffs next season. At worst, he has to at the very least confirm that Utah's future is optimistic, no matter what the results are in the end.
He'll have a few years to prove himself, but Mosley's firing shows that it may only be a few...
