Every Lauri Markkanen trade idea has to start with the same disclaimer: the Utah Jazz aren't trading him. The only way they would is if they got an offer they couldn't refuse. The one team that can give that to them happens to be the one team that once had him on their radar: the Golden State Warriors. The irony in a potential trade though would be if Draymond Green would be included.
It would be ironic, since Green was the one who told the Warriors not to pursue Markkanen because he doesn't trust Danny Ainge in trade discussions. As understandable as that is, it's hard not to think Golden State messed up big time when they missed out on the Jazz star when he was right there.
And now, the Warriors are scrambling yet again, as their old age is catching up to them. At 16-15, Golden State is running out of time and running low on options. Markkanen isn't on the table, but the Warriors could give the Jazz an enticing package if he was: the chance to take advantage of a rebuilding team.
Blue Man Hoops' Jack Simone proposed a swap between the Jazz and Warriors in which the following would happen.
Warriors get: Markkanen
Jazz get: Green, Jonathan Kuminga, and "some serious draft capital"
Said draft capital would have to be right when Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler either retire or are very clearly over the hill, as Utah doesn't currently desire more assets but better ones. First-round picks with a high likelihood of being high would be what Utah would want in a Markkanen trade. The Warriors can offer that, but only if they meet the aforementioned parameters.
Sure, Markkanen would help Golden State transition into a new era post Curry and Green, but in an unforgiving Western Conference on a Warriors team with no draft assets to build around? All you can say is good luck.
The Jazz would have to re-route Green (& Kuminga) elsewhere
Utah would also have no use for Green or Kuminga, so they would have to find a third team to get a deal done. That shouldn't be too hard to find a taker for a player who still is considered one of the best defenders in the NBA not being paid way too much for what he can still do (almost $26 million with a player option for next season).
Kuminga might be a whole different ordeal, as his value has completely plummeted. He is good enough that a team could talk itself into acquiring him, but Utah also wouldn't want to trade him in exchange for more long-term salary. If the Jazz can't find a suitor, they can simply waive him, as he has a club option that wouldn't be on their payroll should they go with that option.
All of this boils down to a, if the Jazz would change their mind on Markkanen and b, if the Warriors become that desperate. While the latter is definitely appearing to be the case, the former seems so unlikely that suggesting as such is currently farfetched.
Markkanen won't be a Warrior anytime soon, but a trade scenario like this could be justified if the Jazz were to pull the trigger.
