The Utah Jazz will be on the rise this coming season. That much is clear. The Los Angeles Clippers are in a much more ambiguous spot. They've made quite changes in the calendar year, trading James Harden, Ivica Zubac, Kawhi Leonard (?), and now, Bennedict Mathurin. It's not clear where they're going, but they're clearly retooling.
They're not a bad team, but it's clear they don't have the exact same aspirations they did when they had Leonard. If they plan to keep changing things up, Kris Dunn could be available, and if he is (there's no intel confirming that as of now), the Jazz really should think about a reunion.
There aren't that many concerns about the amount of points the Jazz can put on the board, but there definitely are on the other side of the floor. Outside of Jaren Jackson Jr., Utah only has a few proven players on defense, but not exactly the highest-ceiling players.
Dunn would not only give Utah some more defense on that end of the floor, but he's one of Will Hardy's success stories as a Jazzman. His NBA career was hanging by a thread before the Jazz brought him in. From there, he became a starter that played well enough to get him his biggest contract in the 2024 NBA Offseason.
He hasn't slowed down a bit since joining the Clippers.
So if the Clippers continue parting ways with its players, and that includes Dunn, the Jazz should absolutely come calling if they do.
The Jazz have the means to get it done
At the moment, the Jazz have a full roster, though Mo Bamba's contract is team-friendly enough that they won't have to worry if they want to get an upgrade down the line. They also have some available cap room even after the moves they've made.
From a salary cap perspective, Dunn would be pretty cheap, as he's owed just $5.7 million in the last year of his deal. Utah also has a $15 million trade exception thanks to the Kessler deal. Not to mention quite a few assets. Since Dunn is an expiring, the Clippers probably wouldn't demand that much from him if they made him available.
Even better, it would work out on Dunn's end, as he'd be given perhaps a better chance to showcase if he helps improve the Jazz's defense, which would benefit their playoff hopes this season. That would all result in another payday this summer.
A reunion like this makes all the sense in the world, but it would all depend on what the Clippers do next.
