As the Toronto Raptors figure themselves out, Gary Trent Jr. is another player who could end up leaving to pursue other opportunities. And it seems that Trent is at the point in his career where he’s going to find the biggest possible payday. And he should. At 24 years old, he’ll have the opportunity to set up his family for generations to come with one single contract.

The Utah Jazz shouldn’t be the team that offers him that contract, however. Even though he would seemingly fit, especially if the team decides to move on from Jordan Clarkson, I’m not sure if Trent is the type of young player they should be targeting in free agency.

Instead of taking a swing on a free agent like Trent, the Jazz should be trying to take risks on players that could theoretically outperform their contracts. Even if Trent does continue to play at a high level over the next few years of his career, it will be exceptionally hard for him to outperform what could end up being a $20-plus million per season deal.

Trent is a good player but not a great fit for the Jazz at this stage in their rebuild.
