The Utah Jazz have been in conversation with the New York Knicks for over a month now, but even after a recent update that the two had re-engaged in talks over Donovan Mitchell, no trade seems imminent. A lot of information has been filtering through the media from both sides of this stalemate, and after opening up negotiations again, a bit of news came out via Stephen A Smith that directly contradicts what we’d thought when the talks first began.
Knicks fans would love to offload Julius Randle and hand the keys to young Obi Toppin, but as most rational people have already known, Utah have no interest in that, and until this interview, most believed the report of a few weeks ago that the Jazz higher-ups were not interested in RJ Barrett either, rather a haul centred around young Quentin Grimes. Speaking on Sirius XM NBA Radio however, Smith claims that the Jazz ‘want RJ Barrett along with 6 First-Round picks’, which would certainly be an intriguing and impressive haul for the three-time All Star.
This is quite different from what we heard a few weeks back, but given the caliber of scorer Spida has become over the past few years, could anyone really blame Danny Ainge for seeking someone with the ceiling of RJ Barrett, along with a handful of picks? It’s safe to say that New York are going to do everything that they can to pair No. 45 with No. 9, and if Utah won’t budge on this asking price, then a trade may finally be fully dead.
So what do you think? Do Utah do any type of deal with the Knicks if it doesn’t include RJ Barrett? Would you want a guy like RJ on this Jazz team? Would you prefer Barrett and picks or keeping Mitchell? As always, let us know all your thoughts and comments below.
