The Utah Jazz have seen their name in the rumour mill all off-season long so far, and after the shocking news that the team was listening to calls on Donovan Mitchell, the rumours have gone into overdrive. Over the past few days however, all seems to be quiet on the Jazz front, as CEO of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge is seemingly set on what he wants, and so far, no one seems to be meeting that price. So, where does that leave the Jazz, if Mitchell is potentially staying in Salt Lake City for 2022 and beyond?
The logical answer is a simple re-tool around No. 45, and after the team traded away Rudy Gobert for a haul of picks, they have the ability to make some moves that would allow this team to once again compete for a playoff spot in 2022/23. This team has good depth at the guard spot, and if they can make a move for a game-changing big man like Myles Turner, John Collins or Julius Randle, the Jazz could be set for a good season, but first, they need to sort out what’s happening at guard.
The team has plenty of talent, but at this point, there’s just too much depth, and if the latest rumour is to be believed, Utah could be targeting a Cavs guard to help out with that.
In the above clip, Tony Jones wonders if Utah do indeed keep Donovan Mitchell, that the team could target 23-year old Collin Sexton, who has the potential to be an All-Star at the point guard spot. The Cavaliers recently offered Sexton a contract in the $13 million per year range, as he is coming off an injury that has seen him miss a lot of time on the court, but he turned that down, and one year away from being a UFA, it makes sense that Cleveland will start taking offers on him.
With a young core, the Cavs are certainly looking to compete in the coming years, and getting Mike Conley, Patrick Beverley or Jordan Clarkson as more established players to help with that could facilitate a move here. There would be so many moving parts on this deal, as the Jazz don’t yet even know if they’ll be keeping Mitchell, but if they do, a pivot to re-tooling and competing in 2022/23 makes sense, and Collin Sexton could be a genuine option to pair No. 45 in the backcourt if that indeed happens.
So what do you think? Could Collin Sexton be an option for Utah? Do you see the team re-tooling, or will they stick with the rumours of moving Spida? How should they re-tool if that’s the route they go? As always, let us know all your thoughts in the comments!
