Donovan Mitchell trade talks between the Knicks and Utah Jazz have stalled
By Nathan Smith
The Utah Jazz moved away from Rudy Gobert early in the off-season, and the belief was that Danny Ainge was going to send this team into a full rebuild by also moving Donovan Mitchell, and at this point, a trade seems inevitable. Just a few days ago, Knicks twitter was in a frenzy over news that the home-town kid was on his way back to New York, but those turned out to be just rumours, and as of this point, Donovan Mitchell is still a member of the Utah Jazz organization.
Given the amount of draft picks the Knicks can trade to the Jazz, they’re still the favourite to land No. 45, but per Shams Charania, the two sides haven’t spoken in a week, and trade talks between the two sides have stalled. Danny Ainge still has Mitchell under control for three more years, and if no team before the beginning of the 2022/23 season meet his desired asking price, he has all the time in the world on his side.
Utah would love to have a clear vision going forward, whether that’s building around Mitchell or rebuilding and trading the entire squad away, but if they can’t find suitors for Mitchell, it will send this team into an odd combination of the two, so there’s still a great likelihood that Donovan is on the move this off-season.
Whether it’s the Knicks or any of the interested parties, acquiring Mitchell will give Utah a kings ransom of picks, as well as young players, and at some point this off-season, a team is likely to get desperate enough to meet Ainge’s asking price.
So what do you think? Do the Knicks step up and meet Ainge’s price? Does another team somehow find the picks to match it? Does Mitchell start the season in Salt Lake City? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments!
