Trade Up

The biggest potential benefit to the Jazz’s draft capital is their ability to trade up in future drafts. Trading up can often be costly, with recent examples having teams giving up two additional picks just to move up a few spots.

That said, the Jazz should be able to do just that, considering they’ll have plenty of draft assets and could be picking in the top 10 for the next few seasons. That’s important because moving up into the top five of any draft dramatically increases the chances of selecting a star, especially in next year’s draft.

This is key because the Jazz likely aren’t going to get back into title contention by signing big-name free agents. No, they’ll have to rely on the draft to find their next franchise player, and using their acquired assets can help them in that process.

All in all, the Jazz are in a good spot with the return they received in the Golbert trade, and the assets they could receive in a Mitchell trade. Actually, those picks could prove useful in a rebuild, allowing them to target young talent in trades, double their chances at selecting a star, and trading up in future drafts.
