4 ways the Utah Jazz could rebuild this summer
Utah Jazz offseason Plan C: Keep Gobert, trade Mitchell
There’s only one world where Plan C is enacted. It’s not a world the Utah Jazz would like to consider, but it threatens to become a real one this offseason regardless.
If Donovan Mitchell demands a trade, the Jazz will have to acquise. Some observers will call to get value for Gobert in addition to moving Mitchell. We’ll address that potentiality as well. Still, it may not be necessary.
It so happens that one of Mitchell’s potential suitors can offer them pretty good value for the star guard.
If the Jazz are forced to move on from Mitchell, they could do worse than this.
Tyler Herro is a whole three years younger. He’s widely regarded as having star potential: it’s not impossible that he can eventually equal or even surpass the Jazz’s current franchise player.
Omer Yurtseven would be acquired as Gobert’s backup, but he’s also a contingency plan in the event that this iteration of the Jazz falters. He’s flashed starter potential, and could be a fixture for the team in the future if they eventually part with Gobert. The two first-round picks they’re acquiring in this deal don’t hurt that end either.
Duncan Robinson is mostly here to match contracts, but he has potential value as a floor-spacer. The 37% he’s shooting from distance this season marks a departure from his 40.6% career conversion rate.
This deal positions the Jazz to remain competitive while also keeping an eye towards the future. As Plan Cs go, that’s not a bad one.
