3 studs and 1 dud from Utah Jazz win over Spurs
Utah Jazz dud: Mike Conley
We’d like to start this section by issuing Mike Conley an apology. We feel as if we’ve awarded him the dubious “dud” distinction too often this season. He’s actually enjoying a solid year, averaging 14.1 points and 5.3 assists while shooting 43.4% from downtown.
It’s just that Conley typically gives this team a solid, quiet performance. So when he doesn’t meet that bar, it’s a little bit louder. Last night’s game screamed “off night”.
Conley finished with 12 points on 5/15 shooting from the field, including a 1/6 mark from three-point land. He also managed a mere 2 assists in this contest. He did steal the ball 4 times, which allowed the Jazz to successfully attack in transition.
That’s great, but the Jazz will need more from Conley in half-court sets to weather Mitchell’s absence against stiffer competition. Luckily, he’s likely to give it to them. He’s one of the most reliable contributors on this team: he just didn’t have it last night.
This game felt compromised from the beginning. Without Donovan Mitchell or Dejounte Murray in action, fans weren’t treated to the showdown that could have been. Utah Jazz fans should be pleased that their club came away with a victory anyway.
