Utah Jazz: 5 stars to pair with Gobert if he can’t reconcile with Mitchell
By Caleb Manser
Trae Young
Trae Young is probably the most untouchable player on this list. He’s only 21 years old, and has been putting up historic numbers.
He’s the youngest player to average 30 points and 10 assists per game in consecutive months, and he looks like a young Stephen Curry in my opinion. He’s eager to start winning now, and has been pushing the Atlanta Hawks to get him some help on the roster.
Help may be on the way for the Hawks, as they have several young pieces around him, such as Kevin Huerter (21), John Collins (22), Cam Reddish (20), and De’Andre Hunter (22). But they won’t be ready to help for a playoff push for a couple years at least.
That’s a big reason why they acquired Clint Capela from the Houston Rockets at this year’s trade deadline. The Hawks were supposed to be within striking distance of the playoffs this year, and make it to the 30 win range.
But instead, they hung near the cellar of the Eastern Conference for the better part of the season, occasionally trading places with the New York Knicks.
Regardless of his situation, let’s dream for a minute about the possibilities of Trae Young teamed up with Rudy Gobert.
Young can shoot the three ball from galaxies away and still drain them, and he can make plays as a point guard. That goes perfectly with Gobert’s game, which relies on an elite playmaker to run the pick and roll with him, as well as the need for excellent shooters.
The two of them hit it off playing for team Giannis at the 2020 All-Star game, and Young was one of the only NBA players to come to Rudy’s defense when he contracted the novel coronavirus.
Meanwhile, the Hawks would be getting in exchange one of the NBA’s most coachable star players in Mitchell. He was experience not only scoring buckets, but doing so for a high quality playoff team.
It’s far-fetched, but still a possibility we should keep on our mind just in case Young does ever become available.
