Utah Jazz: Donovan Mitchell second to test positive for coronavirus
Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell became the second player on the team and in the NBA to test positive for coronavirus this morning.
The NBA season has been suspended, and now two Utah Jazz players have been confirmed to have novel coronavirus — Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.
The news regarding Mitchell’s positive test results came this morning, with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reporting.
Following last night’s stunning development, fifty-eight members of the Utah Jazz organization were tested for novel coronavirus, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Mitchell was the only one to come back positive.
Gobert and Mitchell, the Utah Jazz’s two All-Stars and arguably the two biggest faces in the state of Utah, appear to be the only ones in the organization with novel coronavirus. The news, though, has affected everyone involved.
Players from teams that the Utah Jazz have faced over the last five games are being told to self-quarantine after the Gobert/Mitchell results came back, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps.
Those teams are the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors.
The NBA going on a hiatus and suspending the season was really the best option. They were originally discussing playing games with no fans in attendance, but after Gobert’s positive test last night, the league was left with one choice.
It’s currently unclear as to how long the regular season will be suspended, but according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps, it will be two weeks at the very least. The safety of the players and fans is the top concern.
