Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell celebrates with Marvel fans about Spider-Man returning to the MCU, but Rudy Gobert thinks he’s striking out with Zendaya.

Although multiple Utah Jazz players are active on Twitter, star guard Donovan Mitchell may be the team’s social media king. Mitchell is often quick to drop a tweet about the big story of the day and he was at it again on Friday, tweeting in solidarity with Marvel fans everywhere about Spider-Man remaining part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Meanwhile, Rudy Gobert seems to think Mitchell was just trying to weasel his way into Spidey star Zendaya’s DMs, and the Stifle Tower is having none of it.

Let’s back up.

For those unlearned in the ways of the franchise, Spider-Man has been a big part of the MCU since first appearing alongside the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War. The key to remember about all of this is that Spidey’s cinematic rights are actually held by Sony, who struck a deal with Marvel before they were making movies of their own.

The character has only been able to be a part of the MCU since Civil War through an agreement between Disney/Marvel and Sony. Earlier this summer, though, that collaboration seemingly went kaput, leaving fans to lament the MCU losing the web-slinger, arguably its flagship character.

Fast-forward to now and the two sides look to have patched things up, keeping Spidey in the MCU (for at least one more movie, anyway). Fans have been freaking out since that news broke, including Mitchell, who was one of nearly 100,000 people to retweet celebratory GIF tweet from Zendaya —

One would assume he’s just as happy as the rest of us that this is happening, but Gobert was quick to call him out, insinuating that something other than Marvel/Spider-Man fandom was in play —

And, really, it’s hard to debate Gobert on this one given that Mitchell once posted a picture of Zendaya on both Twitter and Instagram with the accompanying text “Future wifey” and has a history of liking and commenting on her posts and talking about her in general.

I’ll say this about Mitchell — he’s got gumption. First he stole Spider-Man’s suit, now he’s out to steal his girlfriend.

Dastardly! Also — Gobert is a beast on Twitter in his own right.
