Former Indiana forward and Utah Jazz summer leauguer Juwan Morgan looks to be headed to training camp with Quin Snyder’s crew.
The Utah Jazz’s main roster for opening night is all but set, but the team continues to add players in preparation for training camp this fall. On Monday, another player was reportedly added to the mix.
According to The Athletic’s Michael Scotto, former Indiana forward Juwan Morgan is set to ink an Exhibit 10 contract with the team.
The 6-foot-8, 232-pound Morgan went undrafted after a four-year run with the Hoosiers, but quickly caught on with the Jazz’s summer league squad. After an uneventful two games in the Salt Lake City league, he put up seven points and six boards per contest over four games in Las Vegas.
More than anything, though, it was likely Morgan’s defense that resonated with Jazz brass and head coach Quin Snyder.
Although he showed some ability to play in the post and produce points as a collegiate, his ability to guard multiple positions on the floor — perhaps as many as five — is obviously a major asset in a league where teams are switching on everything now. He’s shown impressive energy and toughness on that side of the court as well.
Still, while his defense earned the initial look and contract, Morgan’s offensive improvement will be key in his ability to get a real chance at the NBA level. In particular, he needs to show he can play on the perimeter and space the floor at least a little. Over his four years at IU, he shot just 29.7 percent from 3-point range.
As an Exhibit 10 signing, Morgan will be in camp with the Jazz and incentivized to remain with the team’s G-League affiliate — the Salt Lake City Stars — in the event that he’s waived. Exhibit 10 players receive a bonus of $5,000 to $50,000 if they sign on with the affiliate squad.
The bonus won’t count against the Jazz’s salary cap.
