Guys rounding out the bench – Competition

Last of all, the Utah Jazz bench is rounded out by lesser known guys such as former second-round pick Nigel Williams-Goss, 2019 second-round pick Miye Oni and a pair of NBA hopefuls that will be fighting for Utah’s final roster spot in William Howard and Stanton Kidd. While it’s entirely possible that none of them will receive all that much playing time nor benefit from the greatest opportunities, there’s also always a chance that one could become a diamond in the rough.

They’ve all shown flashes of that sort of capability, be it due to steady decision making and a high basketball IQ, stretch-four abilities or lock-down defense. Therefore, these four will bring something exciting and special to the Jazz team next season – competition.

That will begin with the battle between Howard and Kidd who are fighting for their actual NBA lives. But even after one of them makes the final roster, that competition will continue. Although the Jazz are a deep and well-rounded team, guys like Williams-Goss, Oni and the other two have talents and traits that could challenge the players above them.

Particularly if there is an injury setback or a rotation player falls into a slump, there will be talented, scrappy and determined guys waiting in reserve to step up and fill that void. Even if these final Jazz newcomers never log meaningful minutes, the fact that they’re on the roster and working to improve each and every day should help foster competition and push the players ahead of them on the depth chart.

Whether any of them surpass their teammates or not, the mere fact that they’ll be there competing will infuse the rest of the team with extra motivation and effort across the board.
