Tre Jones

Does this guy look familiar? He should, because he’s the youngest brother of Minnesota Timberwolves guard Tyus Jones. Tre Jones plays for – surprise – Duke University, just like Tyus did.

Tre is similar to Tyus in multiple ways, one of them being that they’re both true point guards. They’re unselfish, get everyone involved and make their teammates better.

Something I love in point guards is taking care of the basketball. Some turn it over like crazy, like Russell Westbrook, and some rarely cough it up, like Darren Collison. I reference Collison, because he led the league in assist/turnover ratio last season.

Jones, like Collison, takes care of the ball. Jones is barely averaging a turnover per game despite averaging over 30 minutes per contest this season for Duke. Remember, he’s a Freshman. That makes it even more impressive. Ricky Rubio is a great facilitator, but he does commit turnovers that make you want to rip your hair out.

Jones needs to work on his three-point shot, as he’s shooting under 30 percent from deep with Duke. That’s not ideal. However, he is very effective inside the arc, whether it’s finishing at the rim or shooting it from mid-range.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jones heads for the NBA after one year at Duke. After all, his brother Tyus was a one-and-done. If so, he could definitely be available when the Jazz are picking. He’ll certainly be an option for a team looking for a solid point guard with potential. He may not become a star, but I’m confident he’ll be a serviceable NBA player for many years.
