Donovan Mitchell

Outside of Rudy Gobert, I’d say that Donovan Mitchell is the only other current Jazzman who has a shot at making the All-Star Game. In fact, you could argue that perhaps Mitchell has an even better shot. As good as Gobert is and important as he is to the Jazz squad, Mitchell’s popularity has sky-rocketed this past year and all throughout the offseason. That kind of fame could very well help him earn some votes to become an All-Star starter.

Unfortunately, as awesome as it would be to see that come to fruition, I just don’t see it happening in the deep West. With superstars like Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, James Harden, LeBron James, Anthony Davis and others dominating that conference, it’ll be no easy task for Donovan to bust his way into the All-Star starting lineup.

However, after putting up over 20 points per game last season and serving as one of the absolute leaders of a dominant Jazz squad, it’s entirely possible that if Mitchell ups his game to the next level, he could get in via the coaches’ selection.

It’s very much common for a top-four team to enjoy having multiple players in the All-Star Game (just look at the Golden State Warriors who would probably get their whole starting lineup in if DeMarcus Cousins were healthy), so if Donovan can help lead his teammates to an elite spot in the West by the time the votes are cast, don’t be shocked to see him finding his way into the All-Star Game alongside Gobert.

That will become even more likely if Donovan ups his scoring to the low to mid-20 points per game mark and increases his shooting efficiency and assists. He was right in line with a few players who qualified for the All-Star Game last season, particularly out of the East, so if he exceeds expectations once again, the second-year player should absolutely merit consideration.
