Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell’s home run swing from James Harden’s charity softball game was highlighted on the MLB Twitter account.
If you hadn’t noticed, we here at The J-Notes been all over the Donovan Mitchell coverage lately. Not only can we not get enough of the Utah Jazz phenom, but it seems of late that he just can’t stay out of the limelight, and I mean that in the best possible way.
The guy thrived on the court as a rookie with the Utah Jazz and his popularity continues to soar as he proves time and time again just what a stud he is off the court as well.
As I mentioned a couple days back, this weekend Donovan Mitchell participated in James Harden‘s celebrity softball game in Houston. As a former baseball player, it came as no surprise that he excelled in the contest, knocking a pair of homers out of the park as Team Chris Paul defeated Team James Harden.
Well, it turns out that his hits are turning more heads than just that of Jazz and even NBA fans. On Monday, the MLB Twitter account got a hold of Donovan Mitchell’s beautiful shot over the fence, and tagged him in it on Twitter–
This might not seem like all that big of a deal at initial glance. After all, anybody can tag anybody on social media in the blink of an eye. But take a step back and think about this for a second.
The MLB season is in one of the most exciting parts of the year as the playoff race is heating up dramatically across the league, yet their official Twitter account took the time to highlight an NBA player hitting one out of the park at a softball game. And not just any player, a Utah Jazz player.
It’s somewhat common for other leagues to highlight big-time stars from other sports when it’s applicable, but randomly tagging a player such as in this instance is pretty rare. Unless, of course, you consider Donovan Mitchell one of those aforementioned big-time stars. Whether you think he’s one now or not, though, little things like this continue to prove that at a minimum, that’s the direction he’s heading.
When’s the last time you remember a Jazz player being so popular that other leagues and fans from other teams were excited to showcase, follow and promote him? I’m not a historian by any means, but somewhere in the range of ‘hardly ever’ to ‘never’ sounds pretty accurate to me.
Make no mistake about it, after doing all the right things on and off the court, Donovan Mitchell is quickly ascending the ranks of stardom. As I mentioned, this may seem like a rather small gesture, but when looking at it in context and comparing it to the typical treatment of Utah Jazz players, it’s pretty substantial.
Without a doubt, Donovan Mitchell is the real deal. And as he continues to improve on the court and elevate his Jazz team to new heights, his national acclaim and popularity are certain only to grow.
