Utah Jazz: Top player comparisons for Grayson Allen
By John Keeffer
Matthew Dellavedova, Milwaukee Bucks
It’s hard not to find a picture of Matthew Dellavedova on the floor, because that is where he spends the majority of his time scrapping for loose balls and causing havoc. That is where the similarities to Grayson Allen start.
Let me get this out of the way early as well, I believe Allen can be a better version of Dellavedova.
Dellie has gained a pretty sore reputation after some of his play with the Cleveland Cavaliers. During a playoff series with the Atlanta Hawks, he was involved in a few altercations where he dove for loose balls and made contact with opposing players’ legs. Because of that, he has somewhat earned the reputation as a dirty player…sound like anybody else you know?
In all honestly, the biggest similarity between Dellie and Allen, are they are over the top competitors. Does that mean that they sometimes go over the line? Yeah. Definitely.
Is that ultra high competitiveness also part of the reason they made it to the NBA? Absolutely. They will both constantly outwork the competition, and they will make winning hustle plays.
There are more similarities than just their level of competitiveness and hustle. Dellavedova has been a solid role player throughout his career. With the Cavaliers and with the Bucks, he proved a capable point guard who can run an effective offense. Per-36 minutes, he has averaged 6.5, 6.5, and 7.3 assists per game.
With both LeBron James and Antetokounmpo, he showed he can easily switch off the ball, and can be an effective spot up shooter. Throughout his career, he has never shot below 36.7 percent from three, and also has two seasons of shooting above 40 percent.
I think Allen is a more athletic version of Dellie, and can also score in a greater variety of ways. With the 21st pick, that is a great value.
