Doug McDermott

Some guys find themselves in the NBA because they have one particular skill that they do really, really well. Enter Doug McDermott. McDermott has found a niche in the NBA as a shooter and while some may consider him a one-trick pony, his shooting provides enough value for him to stay in the league.

McDermott has shot better than 40 percent from deep for his NBA career. This past season he went an impressive 42.6 percent, including a mind-blowing 49.4 percent in his 26 games played with the Dallas Mavericks. It’s no secret that Utah needs to add more shooting in order to better space the floor and become more of a threat overall on the offensive end and McDermott would certainly fit that bill.

McDermott is a restricted free agent, so Dallas would be able to match any offers sent his way, but as several teams look to make changes this summer, I could still see him being very much attainable. He made just over $3 million this past summer, and while he figures to be in for a bit of a raise this offseason, I believe he could still be had for a reasonable amount.

Of course, the issues with McDermott come on the defensive end where he’s far from stellar. However, if Utah is looking to simply throw some elite shooting into their mix, then McDermott could be an excellent pickup for their reserve unit. His nickname is Dougie McBuckets for a reason, and if he came to Utah and was able to effectively drain said buckets, he’d instantly find a role on the team and a spot in Jazz fans’ hearts.
