Chandler Hutchison believes he would be good fit with Utah Jazz
NBA Draft prospect Chandler Hutchison recently stated that he believes he would be a good fit with the Utah Jazz.
With draft night quickly approaching, speculation about who the Utah Jazz may select at No. 21 is at an all-time high. The list of promising prospects that could be had with a late first-round pick is lengthy, and the Jazz will have their hands full making a decision.
One intriguing such option is Boise State product Chandler Hutchison. Many mock drafts project that he will be go near Utah’s range and some even have him going directly to the Jazz themselves.
However, Hutchison is somewhat of an interesting prospect considering that he pulled out of the NBA Draft Combine and cancelled all pre-draft workouts after reportedly receiving a draft promise from a team selecting in the first round. Many have pinned this promise to the Chicago Bulls who will be selecting at No. 22, just after the Jazz.
If the Bulls are indeed the team that extended the promise and no other team feels inclined to reach for him, he will be an option for the Jazz at No. 21. He has some nice traits, specifically as a more mature, NBA-ready prospect, but also, like all prospects, has some concerns about his game as well.
Still, his shot-making and versatility on both ends of the floor certainly make him appear as if he’d be a good fit for the Jazz. And according to Hutchison himself, he also believes the Jazz are a team where his skill set could fit well.
Recently, the Boise State product spoke with Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson of ScoopB Radio to discuss that very thing. Due to the fact that Hutchison has been linked to the Jazz in many mock drafts, Robinson wanted to know what he thought about playing there. Here’s what he had to say–
"“I think there are a lot of different teams that are pretty good fits and, you know, the way they (the Utah Jazz) run, I’ve been told multiple times that I would fit in that situation at Utah being able to play with Joe (Ingles) and being able compliment him, so I think that could be something positive. I think that could work.”"
Hutchison later went on to refer to Ingles as “one of the best shooters in the NBA, if not the best.”
It’s not hard to agree with Hutchison’s potential fit as a dynamic playmaker and scorer that could help open up the floor for the likes of Ingles and others. He also has the potential to play some small-ball four at some point in his career, allowing him to slide into an even more necessary spot for Utah.
The fact that he feels he would be a good fit with Utah is nice to see, but at the same time kind of irks me. If he wanted teams to get a better feel for his fit and judge how he could contribute, then why pull out of the combine and workouts? I would have loved if the Jazz could have gotten a closer look at him in a pre-draft workout and perhaps felt even more secure about his potential fit.
Lo and behold, such never happened. And while that by no means signifies that they won’t draft him (Dante Exum never worked out for the Jazz either, as an example), I do think it lowers the odds. There will be plenty of solid options available for the Jazz at No. 21, so regardless of whether Hutchison is there or not, he may not ultimately be the guy they opt to go with.
