Utah Jazz: A far-too-early look at potential free agent targets this summer
Wilson Chandler
Current Team: Denver Nuggets
Status: Unrestricted (Player option)
What I like:
Wilson Chandler is a guy that some Jazz fans have had their eyes on for a while as a potential stretch-four fit in Utah. He is certainly capable of knocking down the three, but what I like more about Chandler is his versatility and willingness to do the dirty work. He’s a gritty player that fights for the ball, and when he’s at his best, he does a lot to help his team win.
What I don’t like:
However, there are plenty of concerns that I have with Chandler. For one, he has a player option for next season, and while I think he may be wiling to opt out of it to look for a more meaningful role on a team outside of the Nuggets, he may find himself hard-pressed to top the $12.8 million he’s owed next year.
Even if Chandler is available, although he’s considered a stretch-big by many, his three-point shooting actually leaves quite a bit to be desired as he’s shot just over 33 percent in each of the past two years. I worry about his consistency and focus as well, as he’s suffered several ups and downs during his time in Denver.
Final Thoughts:
I can see Chandler’s appeal and perhaps Quin Snyder would maximize his talents. However, I feel like the positives that he would bring are similar to what the Jazz already have in Crowder and that their free agent money would likely be better spent elsewhere.
