Darren Collison
Darren Collison is another player that The J-Notes’ Ryan Aston brought up in his recent piece looking at trade options around the league. At the time, I wholeheartedly agreed with his assessment – I loved the idea of adding DC to the fold.
However, a few circumstances have changed my view somewhat. First of all, suddenly Ricky Rubio is playing phenomenally and if this is more than just a spurt, then the Jazz would likely prefer Rubio over Collison. Not only that, but Collison is now listed as out for two to three weeks as he undergoes a minor knee surgery. Trading for him while he’s injured would hurt for this season and could be risky down the road.
Nevertheless, despite being widely unheralded, Collison has been a consistently steady player throughout his career and has done a great job of running Indiana’s offense this season. At the right asking price and in the right situation, adding Collison could be a great move on the court and in the checkbook as his contract is less than Rubio’s and is partially guaranteed for next season, adding further flexibility.
This deal looked better a couple weeks ago, but it’s certainly still one that the Jazz should keep an eye on.
Next: Utah Jazz rumor: OKC willing to trade first-round pick for Hood or Burks?
Clearly, with so many players being shopped, Dennis Lindsey and the Utah Jazz face a tough situation this week. There’s plenty to like about what’s available, but between too high of asking prices or Utah not having enough to give up in return, it’s entirely possible that many potential deals could hit a snag.
A unique trade market this year and plenty of risky decisions facing Jazz brass involving current players on the roster should make for an intriguing couple of days leading up to the trade deadline.
