Ricky Rubio – Finn
Prior to the release of Star Wars Episode VII, many were led to believe that Finn was going to be one of the coolest new characters of the bunch, perhaps even the newest Jedi. He was seen in trailers and the movie poster donning a blue lightsaber, thus many thought he would be the newest exciting force sensitive character.
Similarly, Ricky Rubio came over to the Jazz as a brand new player and many had high hopes that he’d be revolutionary at the point guard position for the Utah Jazz, revamping his career and the Jazz offense. Unfortunately up to this point, both have failed to live up to expectations.
As far as we know, Finn isn’t force sensitive and just has some skills with a lightsaber from his Stormtrooper training with a vibroblade. Rather than be a stud, he wanted to run and hide from the First Order and he eventually got his butt kicked by Kylo Ren.
Meanwhile, Rubio has struggled to assimilate with the Utah Jazz, hasn’t found his shot or chemistry with the team and in many ways has had a negative impact when he’s been on the floor. Rather than turning into the stud we thought he’d be, he’s been largely outplayed by Raul Neto.
Nevertheless, Finn was one of my favorite characters from the new movie and I still have high hopes that he can make an awesome return in Episode VIII. He may not live up to our force-sensitive expectations, but he could very well still turn into a stud himself.
Hopefully the same will be able to be said for Ricky Rubio, who’s looked less than satisfactory through the first quarter of the season, but could very well turn it around to make a stirring comeback. Just as Finn was trapped among the ranks of the Stormtroopers, Rubio was trapped in playoff-less Minnesota and while his decision to change sides hasn’t exactly gotten off to the best start so far, it still very well could.
