Grading the New Emoji/Hashtag for Utah Jazz, NBA

3 of 7

Dallas Mavericks: #MFFL

Ok, call me stupid, but I actually had to look up what this one meant. For those of you not well versed in the Twitter-scape, the Mavericks or the abundant abuse of acronyms these days, it stands for Mavericks Fan For Life. It’s kind of cute I guess, you know, like BFF’s, LOL, and TGIF, but I don’t necessarily think that cute is befitting of a recent Western Conference powerhouse. Sorry, Mavs, but I’m not feeling this one.

Grade: D

Denver Nuggets: #MileHighBasketball

Denver decided to add the iconic “5280 Feet” to their court and to utilize the “Mile High” reference, which has become a staple of the Mile High City, as their hashtag. Boasting the highest elevation of any team in the league, this is a cool fit, but for some reason just throwing “basketball” at the end doesn’t quite scream catchy to me. Even something like #MileHighHoops would have sounded better in my mind. It’s still likable, though, and the double pickaxe emoji is sweet, so I’ll give Denver relatively high marks.

Grade: B+

Detroit Pistons: #DetroitBasketball

If I had a hard time with adding nothing but “basketball” after “Mile High” in Denver, you probably already guessed what I think about this one. I feel like they could have done a lot more with the Pistons name (which is one of the coolest in the league in my opinion) and does anyone really like their current logo and emoji more than the throwback logo with the horse? Anyone? Hate to say it, but this one’s finishing near the bottom in my book.

Golden State Warriors: #DubNation

Again, the whole “nation” thing is cool but has been a little overused. I do like the use of “Dub” in front of it rather than “Warriors” though. And using a hand making the three-point symbol as part of the emoji is actually pretty cool. We get it, Golden State, you’re good at 3-pointers. Nothing much to knock here, overall this is a job well done.

Grade: A-

Houston Rockets: #Rockets50

50 years of Houston Rockets, so why not just add a 50 after their name, right? Well, it’s a little bland if you ask me, especially considering the Rockets (like the Pistons) have a pretty unique name and it feels like they could have come up with a cooler hashtag. And the 50 year anniversary thing is cool, but as far as truly embracing this, they were definitely outdone by the Indiana Pacers (who we’ll look at next). Sorry Houston, but when it comes to this hashtag/emoji combo, we have a problem.
