Post Moves/Footwork: Al Jefferson

At six-foot-ten and 270 pounds, Al Jefferson may be the world’s largest ballerina.

Big Al is surgical on the low block. From about 10 feet in, he’s nearly impossible to stop due to an almost endless arsenal of moves and James Brown-esque footwork. If he’s not dipping his shoulder and bulldozing his way to the hoop, he’s pump-faking or pivoting his twinkle toes to an easy bucket.

One of the most impressive things about Jefferson in the post is his patience. Jefferson will lull the defense to sleep, only to rise up and knock down baby hook after baby hook. He takes his time and strikes when the moment is perfect.

Jefferson’s footwork also makes him deceptively quick, allowing for spin moves that his defender never sees coming. He can also spot up and knock down jumpers to keep the defense honest and allow for teammates to penetrate and capitalize on crisp cuts to the hoop.

Watching Big Al go to work in the low block is truly a work of art. It’s why Zach Lowe awarded him a PhD from Post-Up University.

If that’s not enough, take a look at this video to witness a little greatness.

For what it’s worth, Carlos Boozer also had some pretty fancy footwork, but he’s a wiener, therefore eliminating his eligibility.
