2013-14 Utah Jazz By The Numbers: The Best Of The Rest

Jazz fans, I’ve had fun with the 2013-14 Utah Jazz By The Numbers series, and hopefully you have too. In this post, I’m going to look at some different stats than in previous posts. After all, it’s kind of pointless to look at things like win shares for guys who didn’t play a lot. That being said, let’s jump right in to the conclusion, which focuses on individuals who haven’t been covered previously.

Mike Harris

When Mike Harris made the Jazz roster out of training camp, my initial reaction was wondering who exactly he was. I like to know a little about everyone in camp, but not too much, since the majority of camp invitees get cut before the season starts. The thing that I remember the most about Mike is that he always seems to have a big smile on his face.

Games played: 20

Season (and career) high, points: 13 in the season opener on 10/30/13 vs the Thunder

Longest streak on the inactive list: 7 games from 12/21/13-1/3/14

Pro-rated salary (based on 36/82 games having been played before Harris was waived): $172,705.17

Times shown without a smile on his face: 0, to my recollection

John Lucas III

The Jazz signed John Lucas III in the offseason. In his first season with the Jazz, he got more playing time than expected due to injuries. Thankfully the Jazz guards got healthy as the season went on.

Games started: 6

Jazz record when he played 10 or more minutes: 5-22

Jazz record when he played less than 10 minutes: 5-10

Season high, assists: 5 on 10/30/13 vs the Thunder

Times when he bought pumpkin cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory for Jody Genessy’s kids: 1 – Take a minute to read the story – it’s a nice one, especially considering that pro athletes are often stereotyped as being self-centered.

Jamaal Tinsley

Jamaal was a late addition to the Jazz roster, with the Jazz re-signing him on 10/26/13, just several days prior to the season opener. They needed another PG with Burke set to be sidelined for a while. Jamaal definitely had some good moments in 2011-12 and 2012-13 with the Jazz (while being seemingly far removed from his off-court troubles during his Indiana days), but the magic just wasn’t there in 2013-14.

Field Goal % 20.0 on 4/20 shooting

Days on Jazz roster this stint prior to being waived: 22

Diante Garrett

Following the release of Jamaal Tinsley, the Jazz signed Diante Garrett out of the D-League. He was shopping at Walmart when he got the call to inform him of the news. Over the course of the season he became the primary backup PG to Burke and did a pretty nice job overall.

Games played: 71 (out of the 74 he was around for)

Season (and career) high, assists: 8 at Dallas on 11/22/13

Best +/- of the season: +23 on 2/26/14 at home vs his former team the Phoenix Suns

Marvin Williams

“Marvelous” Marvin Williams was back for his second season with the Jazz in 2013-14. To me, he looked more comfortable on the court this past season than in 2012-13, which can probably be attributed to having more experience in Ty Corbin’s system as well as the departures of Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson. There was more opportunity for Marvin to contribute with those two out of the picture.

Games missed due to injury: 16

Jazz record in those games: 1-15

Games played while wearing a mask to protect his broken nose: 28

Percentage of his career regular-season games (626) played with the Jazz: 22.2

Malcolm Thomas

Malcolm Thomas was claimed off waivers by the Jazz on January 25, 2014 after being waived by the Spurs. He didn’t play much, and with a non-guaranteed contract for 2014-15, it is uncertain if he has a future with the Jazz.

Games when he played 10 or more minutes: 2

Jazz record in the 7 games he played: 1-6

Erik Murphy

Erik Murphy was claimed off waivers on 4/5/14 after being waived by the Bulls. We don’t know much about him or his future with the Jazz since he never played for the Jazz.
